The Truth About Disappointment: When Expectations Break Your Peace
"Disappointment often has less to do with what others did, and more to do with the picture we painted of them in our minds." – Roop Lakhani
You wished for them to be how you wanted them to be, forgetting that they are who they are — shaped by their parents, circumstances, culture, values, and wounds. Their world was never meant to be a mirror of yours.
When you project your image of how they ‘should’ be onto them, you set yourself up for hurt, anger, and sadness. They see life through their own eyes, shaped by their own beliefs and scars. And when they don’t follow your inner script, you feel let down — not because of who they are, but because of the story you created about who they should be.
So, when disappointment knocks, pause and ask: Is it really them upsetting me, or is it my expectation?
Come back to reality: your partner, your loved ones, will never perfectly fit the mold in your mind. Clinging to that mold only creates frustration, resentment, sadness, and even illness in you. And in doing so, you are unknowingly creating an unhappy you.
Let go of the script. Meet people where they are, not where you imagine them to be. In that acceptance lies peace, in peace lies freedom, and in freedom lies love.
To your higher acceptance,
Roop Lakhani
