The Tardigal knows
By Roop Lakhani - 16:11:00
Have you ever gone through a phase where you felt numb, disconnected, exhausted, or unable to move forward—and judged yourself for it?
What if that season was not weakness?
What if it was wisdom?
There is a tiny creature called the tardigrade, often called a "water bear." It is one of the most resilient organisms on Earth.
When conditions become too harsh—extreme cold, drought, lack of oxygen—it does not fight harder.
It does not force itself to keep going.
It pauses.
The tardigrade enters a state called cryptobiosis. Its metabolism slows almost to zero. It conserves energy and waits.
Not because it has given up.
Because it intends to survive.
And when the environment becomes safe again, it unfolds and continues its journey.
Nature does not call this failure.
Nature calls it adaptation.
Yet many of us judge ourselves for doing exactly the same thing.
There are seasons in life when the emotional load becomes too heavy.
Too many responsibilities.
Too much heartbreak.
Too much uncertainty.
Too much giving without receiving.
And suddenly we find ourselves withdrawing.
Feeling numb.
Losing motivation.
Wanting to sleep more.
Avoiding people.
Unable to access the energy we once had.
We tell ourselves we are lazy.
Broken.
Unproductive.
But often the nervous system is simply trying to protect us.
Sometimes what looks like a breakdown is actually a protective pause.
A temporary retreat.
A conservation of energy.
A signal that the body has carried too much for too long.
Just as the tardigrade waits for conditions that support life, your body waits for conditions that support healing.
Safety.
Rest.
Compassion.
Connection.
Gentleness.
This does not mean we stay stuck forever.
The goal is not permanent withdrawal.
The goal is restoration.
Because every pause carries the possibility of renewal.
The caterpillar pauses before becoming a butterfly.
Seeds rest beneath the soil before they bloom.
The earth itself moves through seasons of dormancy and growth.
Perhaps you are not behind.
Perhaps you are in your winter season.
Gathering strength that cannot yet be seen.
And one day, when the conditions are right, you will unfold again.
Not as the person you were.
But as the person you were becoming all along.
Reflection
• Where in my life am I judging myself for needing rest?
• What if my withdrawal is a message rather than a flaw?
• What has my nervous system been trying to protect me from?
• What would creating more safety and gentleness look like right now?
Affirmation
I honour my seasons of rest.
I trust my body's wisdom.
I release the need to force, push, or prove.
I am allowed to pause, heal, and unfold in my own time.
